katelyn shyer
Katelyn had a stroke at nine years old. She lost complete function of her left side and was at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for two months. She had to relearn how to walk, talk, and eat. In the years after her stroke, she felt as if she had no purpose, and she labeled herself as disabled, weird, different, and worthless. But she has found her identity in Jesus Christ and lives daily to serve Him. She can now walk and function independently. She still has no use of her left arm/hand and has left ankle, hip, and hamstring weakness, but that does not stop her. Katelyn faces daily struggles, but that doesn’t hinder her from serving her fellow students and the community. Katelyn feels deeply for special needs and those with disabilities to shine light in their life and encourage them that their weaknesses do not define who they are.
At EPHS, Katelyn was an FCA leader for four years and a Paulding County Student FCA leader for two years. She is also a HOSA Officer and has been in the BETA Club for three years. She is an all-A and B student with a 3.8 GPA.
In her free time, she loves to hang out with friends, work out, and watch or play sports.
Katelyn will attend Toccoa Falls College this fall, majoring in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Sports Psychology.
